TESLAN® 2-Coat Technology Provides More Active Corrosion Inhibition Vs. Best Available 3-Coat Zinc Systems

The performance of Tesla NanoCoating's 2-coat systems, consisting of TESLAN® ZN Primer (carbon nanotube/Zn epoxy), in both standard and low VOC versions, and TESLAN® Urethane Topcoat or TESLAN® CNT/Aspartic/Fluoropolymer Hydrid Topcoat, were evaluated after extended (5000 hr) salt-fog testing per ASTM B-117. Performance was compared to the best available military/commercial 3-coat systems from two leading suppliers of high performance maintenance coatings. These systems consisted of a primer coating of zinc-rich epoxy (MIL-DTL-24441, formula 159), an epoxy intermediate coat (MIL-DTL-24441, formula 152) and a urethane topcoat. All coatings were applied to cold-rolled steel and scribed to expose the bare steel substrate. The TESLAN® systems can be seen to offer enhanced scribe line corrosion inhibition vs. the standard systems, which both showed extensive corrosion and lifting from the scribe. The series of photos below demonstrate firstly why a cathodically active primer is needed for maximum corrosion inhibition. Here the performance of TESLAN® Urethane and TESLAN® CNT/Aspartic/Fluoropolymer Hybrid and coated test panels with and without a primer coat of TESLAN® ZN Primer are compared following 2000 hrs of salt-fog testing.
